Behind the Smiles

Social media posts are bastard liars. They show a fraction of the roller coaster of life. I am not always smiling. I am not always confident. I struggle—often. Continue reading Behind the Smiles

Bullies at the Pool [Life’s teachers are everywhere]

While at the public pool playing with my 6-year-old daughter, I was splashed full-on in the face by some obnoxious young boys. I yelled out in surprise, “Hey! Careful!” The biggest one turned towards me. “What, it’s just water,” he replied with a sneer. Continue reading Bullies at the Pool [Life’s teachers are everywhere]

Cat Black Coffee

I have always been a thinker, an analyzer, a dreamer, a ruminator. Perhaps you can relate! Continue reading Cat Black Coffee

Interrupting Patterns

Wake up, think anxious thoughts, feel stressed, reach for numbing ‘tool’ (such as wine or food), thoughts quieted, fall asleep…wake up, think more anxious thoughts (+ shame for numbing again), feel stressed…and so on.
Sound familiar? Continue reading Interrupting Patterns

Achieving the Dream: My Book Launch

The launch of my first book was January 7, 2022. It was a childhood dream that couldn’t manifest until I finally took alcohol out of my life. Continue reading Achieving the Dream: My Book Launch

The Healing Power of the Poem

Sometimes a poem wakes you up in the middle of the night. Like a baby kicking, it’s inside you, dancing with its own consciousness, until you must throw open your eyes and acknowledge its existence. Continue reading The Healing Power of the Poem

Job Title: Hole-Filler (a letter of resignation)

I drew people to me who had vacant spaces where love should be, and I shoveled myself into those holes, sweating and aching with the effort it takes to fill the unfillable. Continue reading Job Title: Hole-Filler (a letter of resignation)

How can I get my joy back?

Do you wonder why you can’t feel joy even though you look around and your life is good? Do you feel as if you are living in a haze? I know how you feel. I’ve been there. Continue reading How can I get my joy back?

Hesitation Point

I have been scrambled lately. My lengthy To-Do lists and filmy future-dreams are whisked together into a froth inside my brain. Continue reading Hesitation Point

Who do you want to become?

In Atomic Habits, author James Clear suggests that we have been approaching habit change all wrong. Instead of working towards an external goal, we ought to be examining our identity of self.  Continue reading Who do you want to become?

Reading poems with my dear friend (and book illustrator) @cheryllizalive last night at The Workshop
I’m feeling this lately.
When you are uncertain, when things seem impossible, when life appears stalled—invite LOVE to take over.
There are days when staying in comfy clothes and drinking tea by the fire is about as productive as you want to get.
Please remember—here in America—this is not just a day off of school.
I have gratitude for the words, the way they move through me with their healing hands and rub soft my spiky self-criticism.
